Black cabs face extinction unless rules change, say London mayor contenders

Conservative Zac Goldsmith and Labour’s Sadiq Khan call for reforms to enable capital’s distinctive taxis to survive threat from Uber

The two men likely to go head to head in the battle to be London’s mayor next year have said that the capital’s black cabs will become extinct unless the authorities intervene.

Speaking in a Westminster Hall debate in parliament, Zac Goldsmith, who is odds-on to be elected as the Conservative party’s candidate for London mayor, and Sadiq Khan, who was selected as Labour’s candidate on Friday, called for changes to the regulation of taxi companies to preserve the black cab.
