Heavy rain to hit England and Wales in aftermath of Storm Ali

Cumbria and north Lancashire had power cuts while transport in Scotland has been disrupted

High winds and torrential rain are expected to cause travel problems across much of England on Thursday, with drivers in Cumbria advised to avoid all but essential travel as the county braces itself for up to 10cm of torrential rain.

Wind from Storm Ali cut power to 24,000 homes in Cumbria and north Lancashire on Wednesday evening, with 3,000 properties left in the dark overnight.
